Israeli government spokesman Elon Levy described the tunnels used by the Islamist group Hamas as unique, while a British newspaper quoted another official as saying that destroying the Gaza tunnels was like science fiction.
Levy said Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was committed to achieving war goals, including the release of hostages and ending Hamas rule.
In a related context, the British newspaper Financial Times quoted an Israeli official as saying that the destruction of the Gaza tunnels is like science fiction, despite the Israeli government’s spending of resources to find solutions to achieve this goal.
The official revealed that Tel Aviv received US assistance of $ 320 million allocated for anti-tunnel technologies, but to no avail, as he put it.
The Israeli official also said that Hamas had learned from previous attacks andwars launched by the occupation on the Gaza Strip and was aimed at destroying the tunnels.
The official, who declined to be identified, said what Hamas had built under the Gaza Strip “goes beyond the description of tunnels and is like underground cities.”
He said the Israeli military estimated that Hamas’s tunnel network in Gaza was larger than that of the London Underground.
The Wall Street Journal quoted U.S. officials as saying Israel had built a large system of pumps that could be used to flood tunnels used by Hamas beneath the Gaza Strip.
In a related context, the occupying forces claimed to have found more than 800 tunnel openings in the Gaza Strip since the start of the current ground operation.
It said it had destroyed about 500 tunnel openings using explosives to destroy several kilometres of tunnels.
Ahead of Israel’s eighth week of aggression, Hamas said it had hundreds of kilometres of tunnels to serve and protect its bases of operations.
